Roberto Vannacci clashed with Mario Monti on September 5 during the TEHA Forum in Cernobbio. He defended unanimity in the European Union and demanded a different model of integration, but he did not convince the business hall. The dispute besides concerns Poland: the smaller states will lose their protection without the right veto, but the criticism of Brussels itself will not replace the economical programme.
Cool organization in Villa d'Este
Roberto Vannacci, a erstwhile general and leader of Futuro Nazionale, entered the phase of 1 of the most crucial Italian business and economist meetings. Mario Monti, the erstwhile Italian Prime Minister, a lifelong senator and erstwhile European Commissioner, sat other him. The public clearly accepted Monti's arguments. After the debate, Vannacci acknowledged to journalists that it was not apparent to convince this area during the first performance.
However, the cold of the elite forum does not find the moods of the full country. In front of Vannacci's hall, he continued to attract interest and Italian media pay attention to the polling growth of his group. Futuro Nazionale was already ahead of the Mattea Salvini League. This reminds us of the old fact about politics: designation of the elite and support of voters are 2 different currencies.
Unanimity as a Shield of States
The strongest part of Vannacci's speech afraid the European Union. The politician called for another Europe to be built, not simply to increase the scope of integration. He besides defended the principles of unanimity. His argument was clear: if the proposal does not convince all states, the proposal should be improved alternatively of denying states the right to object.
From a Polish perspective, this is the heart of the dispute. The abolition of unanimity in strategical areas would give the largest capitals even more freedom to impose decisions on weaker partners. The veto law can be uncomfortable, but that is why it protects sovereignty. The Feds call it an obstacle due to the fact that it makes it hard to transform the Union from a community of states into a political command center.
Vannacci besides pointed to the weakening attractiveness of the integration project. He recalled Britain's exit and the rejection of the Icelandic accession talks. In the Icelandic vote, 52.8 percent of participants voted against negotiations with the Union. He besides reported a decline in the share of the euro area in global GDP from 30 to 15 percent. These figures are cited as Vannacci's argument during the debate.
Monti strikes charges of fascist rhetoric
Monti responded very harshly. He accused Vannacci of recreating the spirit and rhetoric of Fascism, though he reserved that he did not accuse him of rebuilding the fascist party. The erstwhile Prime Minister tied the message of Futuro Nazionale's leader to suggesting Italy's superiority over another nations. Vannacci was so in a dispute in which criticism of the centralisation of the Union was attempted to shift to the moral field of prosecution.
We gotta keep the precision here. National pride and defence of state competence are not fascism. The nation has the right to require respect and its own voice. The frontier runs in contempt of another nations and in conviction of their lesser value. The right hand must keep an eye on her due to the fact that liable patriotism defends its community without taking the dignity of others.
Brussels criticism needs a program
Vannacci, however, did not take full advantage of the opportunity. According to Italian media reports, entrepreneurs accused him of failing to answer about energy and innovation. It's a serious weakness. Opposition to federalisation is needed, but voters and entrepreneurs have the right to hear the state reduce energy costs, rebuild manufacture and defend competitiveness.
The lesson for the Polish right is clear. The defence of veto and national competences must go together with the professional economical programme. Otherwise, technocrats like Monti will hold an advantage in expert halls, even erstwhile their integration model loses public support. Sovereignty without economical capacity remains a slogan. Ability without sovereignty works on another people's decisions. Poland needs both.
