The State Department present imposed sanctions on 5 Chinese companies associated with Lingwei Ding, a erstwhile Google engineer convicted of stealing commercial secrets in the AI area.

As the spokesperson for the department Tommy Pigott announced, sanctions were imposed on Dinga Zhisuan Technology and 4 another entities that supported his task financially.

Ding, who worked for Google for years, publically claimed that the AI technology he built was able to match the technology of the American corporation. As it turned out, he stole thousands of confidential pages of Google's AI-related business secrets from his erstwhile workplace.

The papers included architecture designed by Google's TPU processors, utilized for the improvement of AI. Ding was detained in March 2024 in California.

The San Francisco jury found him guilty in January 2026 of 7 charges of economical espionage and 7 charges of stealing business secrets. However, the justice subsequently overturned the judgement in the section on economical espionage due to insufficient evidence that the man acted in favour of the Chinese government. In September, Ding was sentenced to a year in prison.

The theft of intellectual property of American AI companies is presently 1 of the problems in US relations with China. In addition to conventional economical espionage, the largest companies in the industry, specified as Anthropic and OpenAI, accuse Chinese competitors of copying their models at a low cost, utilizing a method called distillation, consisting of mass questioning these models. However, the legal position of this practice is little clear than the specified theft of business secrets.
