CHICAGO- United Airlines (UA) is set to operate over 4,600 daily flights from May 22 to May 28, 2025, marking its busiest Memorial Day travel period in history. Chicago O’Hare (ORD), United’s primary hub, will see heavy passenger traffic as the airline expects to fly 3.8 million travelers during this peak week.

CEO Scott Kirby addressed employees in a Memorial Day message, praising U.S. service members and rallying staff for a record-breaking summer. His remarks came as United accelerates its international expansion and reinforces its strategic hold on major U.S. airports like Newark (EWR) and returns to New York JFK (JFK).

United Memorial Day Flights

Memorial Day weekend traditionally signals the start of summer travel, but for United Airlines, 2025 represents a milestone.

The airline average over 540,000 passengers daily, culminating in a peak day of 550,000 travelers on Friday, May 23. United’s Memorial Day strategy includes over 4,600 daily flights—roughly one takeoff every 20 seconds.

Domestically, high-demand destinations include Orlando (MCO), Las Vegas (LAS), Boston (BOS), and San Diego (SAN). Internationally, United’s top holiday picks are Cancun (CUN), London (LHR), and Frankfurt (FRA). The surge underscores a broader trend of strong summer demand despite earlier signs of travel slowdown in March.

CEO Scott Kirby used the moment to thank veterans and staff while reaffirming his vision of United as the best airline in aviation history. His speech highlighted the airline’s resilience, commitment to customer service, and a deep appreciation for those who serve the country.

Growth Abroad

Beyond flight volume, United’s summer plan includes bold network growth. Between June and August, the airline expects to serve 50 million passengers, adding 3 million more than in 2024.

It’s launching 17 new routes, including flights to under-served cities like Nuuk (GOH), Ulaanbaatar (ULN), and Faro (FAO). United will operate up to 950 daily flights to 144 international destinations—37 of which no other U.S. carrier serves.

At the domestic policy level, United is repositioning itself. Under a new U.S. administration, the airline has pivoted from its previous DEI-focused strategies and vaccine mandates.

Kirby and his executive team are now engaging with officials such as Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy to regain slot access at JFK and strengthen control at Newark Liberty (EWR).

This change reflects a pragmatic shift: influence policy while maintaining operations at strategic hubs. A revived partnership with JetBlue (B6) further supports United’s return to JFK and positions it to compete more aggressively in the New York market.

United CEO Ambition

Kirby’s annual Memorial Day address echoed familiar patriotic themes, including a reference to the U.S. as “the greatest country in the history of the planet.” His use of “biggest” and “best” language is consistent with previous statements, but the numbers support his optimism.

United is not just setting internal records—it’s leading U.S. aviation in scale, global access, and summer season capacity.

His message also serves as internal motivation. By celebrating the dedication of United employees and linking it to broader national values, Kirby blends corporate culture with patriotic sentiment—a strategy designed to unify staff amid the pressures of peak season.
