According to FlightRadar24 data, United Airlines flight UA863 took off from San Francisco at 8:31 UTC. After being airborne for almost five hours, the crew declared an emergency and decided to divert to one of the remote airports in the Pacific.
As per the unconfirmed reports, the United flight UA863 crew reported an engine failure, and following this, they made an emergency landing at Honolulu at 14:27 UTC.
The flight was operated by a Boeing 777-200ER, registered as N78002. Further, according to Planespotters.net datait is a 26.7-year-old aircraft and is powered by GE90 engines.

A United Airlines Boeing 777-200ER experienced engine failure during flight operations on January 3, 2025, forcing the aircraft to execute an emergency diversion to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
The aircraft, operating flight UA1828 from Orlando International Airport (MCO) to Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD), departed Orlando at 9:35 PM UTC and encountered the mechanical issue approximately one hour into the flight.

A passenger aboard the flight documented the incident on social media platforms, describing the experience during the emergency situation. The passenger reported that the pilot announced the engine loss and subsequent diversion decision, with the aircraft completing the emergency landing approximately 40 minutes after the initial announcement.
The affected aircraft carries registration number N221UA and operates as a 23.6-year-old Boeing 777-200ER equipped with two Pratt and Whitney PW4000 engines.
