As stated in the Welt am Sonntag (WamS) on Saturday (5.07.2025), 65 495 asylum applications were submitted in Germany from 1 January to 30 June, citing the unpublished data of the European Asylum Agency (EUAA). This is simply a 43 percent decrease compared to the same period the year before. This means that Germany is no longer the European leader in the number of asylum applications in the first six months of the calendar year for the first time in years.
During this period, 76,020 people in Spain and 75,428 in France applied for protection, followed by Germany, Italy with 62,534 asylum seekers, Greece with 27,718 and Belgium with 17,285 applications. At the end of the list are Hungary with 47 asylum applications, Slovakia with 84 and Lithuania with 152.
According to data, most asylum seekers in Germany came from Afghanistan (22%), Syria (20%) and Turkey (11%). 3.1% of applicants, and thus the 5th largest group in Germany, came from Russia.
Over 300 000 proposals in the EU
According to the EU study from early January to late June, a full of 388 299 people applied for asylum in the European Union and Norway and Switzerland. This represents a decrease of 23 percent compared to the first half of 2024.
The most protection seekers in the EU came from Venezuela (48 413), Afghanistan (41 127) and Syria (23 307). Venezuelans most frequently come to Spain, while Germany is simply a major mark for people from Afghanistan and Syria.
The “Bild” reported that the number of first asylum applications in Germany in the first half of 2025 was only 61 300. Only little than 7,000 fresh asylum applications were submitted in June. This was 60 percent little than in the same period last year and 70 percent little than in June 2023, which is the lowest monthly amount since March 2013.
The success of migration policy
German Minister of the Interior Alexander Dobrindt sees fresh data confirming the legitimacy of his migration policy. "These are clearly successful returns in migration policy. We are consistently following the way of restoring the issue of migration to the right path," said the paper "Bild" of CSU policy.
Migration expert and associate of the European Parliament Lena Düpont of the CDU said "WamS": "One of the main reasons for the decline in the number of immigrants – in addition to seasonal effects and increased cooperation between 3rd countries and the EU Border Protection Agency Frontex – are partnership agreements with crucial North African countries".
