The EU-Mercosur Agreement will enter into force despite being referred to the TEU. Von der Leyen speaks of "clear interest"

On Wednesday 21 January 2026, the European Parliament supported the request to mention the trade agreement between the European Union and the Mercosur countries to the EU Court of Justice (TEU), in order to examine its compatibility with the EU Treaties. However, this does not mean automatic blocking of the agreement – the agreement can be implemented on a temporary basis without waiting for the ruling of the TEU.
