The goal was to prevent Russian forces from being spread across the Oskił River. The Russians captured a bridgehead on this river, north of [Kupianska](https://defence24.pl/page-tagow/kupinsk) and managed to grow it in fresh days. The Ukrainian origin reports that on the east side of the river, the Russian army accumulated crucial forces to be transferred to the western side. These forces could then decision towards a 90 km [Charkova](https://defence24.pl/page-tagow/charkov), or make a southward return to effort to cut off a strategically crucial Kupańsk railway node from the west.
