Szmyhal clearly stated that the sanctions imposed by the Council of National safety and Defence of Ukraine on Łukoil do not pose a threat to the energy safety of Slovakia and Europe as a whole. "Therefore, their abolition is not the subject of discussion. We have a full knowing of Brussels on this issue," he added.
Szmyhal stressed that the real threat to Slovakia's energy safety is "Russia, its hybrid energy war against the Slovak people, its blackmail and political ultimatum". He stressed that Slovakia is simply a reliable partner of Ukraine, from which it does not anticipate blackmail or threats. "The threat of Ukraine, which defends itself against the aggressor... is simply a dubious path," said Shmyhal.
Slovakia reactions
Slovakia's president Peter Pellegrini criticized Ukraine for halting transit by oil train relationship of oil produced by Łukoil and threatened to respond to Kiev's actions. Pellegrini stressed that Slovakia is helping Ukraine to reverse gas and electricity supply. "If the situation is not corrected, we will be forced to react," said the president, adding that Slovakia does not deserve this approach from Kiev.
Slovak defence minister Robert Kaliíčk besides expressed his concern, stating that Ukraine's actions were irresponsible. "Stopping the transit of Russian oil, Kiev risks a lot," added Kaliíčk.
Subsequent meetings and hopes for dialogue
Szmyhal announced another Ukrainian-Slovak intergovernmental gathering in October, where he hopes for "constructive, pragmatic dialogue". Szmyhal hopes that these talks will let an agreement to be reached that will benefit both parties.
History of sanctions on Łukoil
Łukoil was sanctioned by Ukraine as early as 2018, but they were limited in nature. In June 2024 Kiev expanded it significantly, including by adding a transit ban. Nevertheless, the Ukrainian side claims that thanks to another Russian companies the pipeline flows the same amount of oil as before.
