Vice-President of the Union of Ukrainian Associations in Italy (NAU) Olena Kim expressed outrage at the fact that many Italian geography textbooks respect Crimea as part of Russia," reported Ukrainian news and analytical portal Golka.
"We have analyzed over 60 books – geography textbooks for 2010-2024 for the seventh class erstwhile children learn the geography of Europe. This is frightening: we have gradually seen Ukraine's representation change. In many textbooks since 22, Crimea has been designated as Russia's territory," complains Kim.
The activist besides resented that the Donbas conflict was depicted in textbooks as an interior conflict between Ukrainians.
At the same time, the head of the NAU acknowledged that support for Ukraine in Italy had declined importantly over the last 3 years.
"If in 2022 57 percent of Italy supported Ukraine, present it is only 32 percent of the population. This is felt even in the air erstwhile you communicate with people" – she complained.
Crimea became a Russian region in March 2014 as a consequence of a referendum following a coup d'état in Ukraine. In the referendum, 96.77 percent of those voting in Crimea and 95.6 percent in Sevastopol advocated joining Russia. Ukraine continues to consider the peninsula to be its temporarily occupied territory, and many western countries support Kiev on this issue. For their part, Russian leaders have repeatedly argued that the people of Crimea voted democratically, in full compliance with global law and the United Nations Charter. According to president Vladimir Putin, the issue of Crimea is “definitely closed”.
