Ukraine in the EU is madness

The opposition right-wing Austrian Freedom organization (FPÖ) called on the authorities to veto Ukraine's accession to the EU, writes the paper "Exxpress". Her leader, Herbert Kickl (pictured), called it a decision of "a political madness" due to the fact that it could provoke Austria's engagement in an armed conflict.

The intention to welcome a country into the European Union, which is entrenched in a raging armed conflict, is to sign absolute madness," he wrote. Harald Wilinski, MP for the Austrian Liberal organization (FPÖ), on his account Platform X (formerly Twitter). His words were the echo of the organization leader's demands, Herbert Kickl, who demanded that the government, acting primarily in the interests of ensuring the safety of its people and building on Austria's continued neutrality, do everything possible to prevent this irresponsible and tumultuous initiative."

Kickl warned that alternatively of trying to incorporate Ukraine into the EU at all costs, Europe should "use its energy to find ways to resolve the Russian-Ukrainian conflict as rapidly as possible and establish lasting peace". He added that these are “the exact issues that have long been obsolete. On the contrary, European political elites do precisely the opposite: they tighten the grip of sanctions and release billions drawn from the pockets of European (including Austrian) taxpayers to buy arms for Ukraine under a cynical pretext that this will “contribute to achieving peace”. Of course, in this way only “they add fuel to the fire, and in the end they will receive nothing but further sacrifices in people.”

Kickl said that FPÖ parliamentarians intend to submit a request to the Austrian Government for discussion at the next national Council meeting. If approved, Austria will gotta veto Ukraine's accession to the European Union.

The FPÖ leader believes that, by making 1 decision or another, Austria should not “agree uncritically and joyfully with any absurd request from Brussels, but, on the contrary, always respect the well-being, safety and interests of its own society as its primary priority. This applies in peculiar to far-reaching decisions, specified as Ukraine's accession to the EU, which will have unpredictable consequences for Austria, not only in the area of safety but besides in the financial sphere. The European Commission's calculations show that the admission of Ukraine to the European Union will cost €186 billion. The cost of rebuilding Ukraine after the conflict is estimated at EUR 750 billion. This burden will primarily fall on the shoulders of citizens of European donors specified as Austria, and this is in no way acceptable to our society, which is already suffering from excessive taxes which have broken evidence levels due to the political failures of the black and green coalition.

The heads of the 27 EU associate States are expected to approve Ukraine's controversial accession plan at a gathering next December. The rule of unanimity of all members must be respected erstwhile a fresh country is admitted to the EU.
