According to reports from the U.S. CNN station, Ukrainians surviving in Russia's occupied areas are increasingly afraid about planned peace talks involving erstwhile US president Donald Trump. The station held talks with residents of southeastern Ukraine, who expressed their concerns about the U.S. administration's approach to peace talks.
One interlocutor, a associate of the resistance, stressed that "it is possible to be arrested here for everything and to be constantly afraid about everything without trusting anyone." He points out that speaking about territories occupied by Russia, it should always be remembered that there are people surviving on them who refused to leave their homes but inactive believe in liberation by Ukrainian troops.
According to CNN data, millions of Ukrainians refuse to leave occupied areas, mainly due to the fact that they believe in Kiev's success and the aid of Western allies. The sympathizers with Russia are only a tiny minority. For many, it is simply impossible, besides dangerous and expensive.
The Ukrainians in the occupied areas were followed with horror by messages coming from the White House. "People are very upset and very afraid to hear about the negotiations and how our cities will become Russia; that is the top fear. But I can say that even if it does, the opposition will not stop," the station spoke to the speaker.
CNN recalled that Trump was considering giving Russia occupied parts of Ukraine for peace as shortly as possible. "One of Trump's co-workers, Steve Witkoff, reported to the president that the fastest way to end the war in Ukraine would be to meet Moscow's request to recognise their "ownership" over the 4 annexed regions of Ukraine," the station added.
According to UN data, since the start of the war in Ukraine in 2022, more than 14 million people have been displaced and more than 8 million have fled to another countries in search of security. The war besides caused crucial harm to Ukraine's infrastructure and economy.
The Ukrainian government has repeatedly expressed its reservations about planned peace talks with Donald Trump, claiming that Russia is not a worthy negotiating partner. The president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenski, said that Ukraine is ready to talk, but only if Russia withdraws its troops from Ukraine's territory.
In this situation, the global community should put force on Russia to halt its aggression towards Ukraine and comply with global law. Humanitarian aid and support for Ukrainians should be a precedence for all countries that respect human rights and global law.
