Ukraine withdraws from the Ottawa Convention

Ukraine acceded to the Ottawa Convention in 1999 and ratified it in 2005. At that time the country had 1 of the largest anti-personnel mine arsenals in the planet – estimated at over six million pieces. For subsequent years Ukraine has consistently destroyed its stocks, keeping only a tiny number of mines for training and investigation purposes, which was in line with the Treaty provisions. The trial ended formally in 2020.
