Mid-Flight Turnaround Due to Passenger Welfare

An easyJet (U2) flight from Manchester Airport (MAN) to Izmir (ADB) was forced to turn back mid-air on Monday evening due to a passenger-related issue.

The EZY2159 service, which departed shortly before 5:00 p.m. local time on June 30, made a U-turn over the North Sea and landed safely back at Manchester around 5:50 p.m., approximately an hour after takeoff.

Flight EZY2159 had been en route from Manchester Airport (MAN) to Adnan Menderes Airport (ADB) in Izmir, Turkey. After flying eastward over Sheffield and Norfolk, the aircraft reversed course while over the North Sea.

The reason, confirmed by easyJet (U2), was a “passenger welfare issue” that required immediate attention.

The airline emphasized that the incident was “beyond our control” and classified it as “an extraordinary circumstance.”

No further details were released regarding the nature of the passenger’s issue, but such terminology typically refers to serious medical or behavioral concerns requiring diversion.

Following the diversion, the flight was grounded overnight in Manchester. easyJet (U2) announced that arrangements were underway to operate a replacement flight on Tuesday morning, July 1. Passengers were informed through the airline’s website and customer service channels.

easyJet provided support to affected travelers in line with standard procedures for irregular operations. Compensation may not apply due to the classification of the event as “extraordinary,” which exempts airlines under EU261 guidelines.
