Donald Tusk presented a threat assessment during a gathering at Campus Polska Future in Olsztyn. Prime Minister told participantsthat Russia is preparing to escalate tensions and that the coming months will be peculiarly crucial for the countries of our region. It indicated autumn and winter as a decisive period for Russia and Ukraine.
Tusk besides declared that Poland remains in constant contact with CIA leadership. He did not uncover the details of these contacts or scenarios for which the government is preparing. In intelligence matters, discretion is obvious, but citizens have the right to know the state of preparation of institutions liable for civilian defence, infrastructure protection and continuity of state action.
Russian threat requires hard realism
Russia wages war against Ukraine and treats military, information and intelligence force as a policy tool. Poland cannot build safety on the belief that membership of Western structures alone will solve any problem. Alliances are worth as much as the state's willingness to fulfil its commitments at the time of trial.
The Prime Minister referred to NATO as "one for all, all for one". This is an crucial statement, but it must be covered in defence plans, ammunition supplies, border protection and an efficient command system.
