Donald Tusk on September 1 at Westerplatte called on the West to further support Ukraine and warned that autumn and winter could find the region's security. On the 87th anniversary of the outbreak of planet War II, the Prime Minister rejected the policy of concessions towards Russia. For Poland, the credibility of alliances and self-defense is at stake.
Appeal on the 87th anniversary of the German assault
The central celebration of the 87th anniversary of the outbreak of planet War II began on 1 September at 4:45 a.m. in front of the Monument of Coast Defenders in Gdańsk. As shown by Official coverage of the Office for Combatants and Represented PersonsPresident Karol Nawrocki, Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamish participated. There were besides veterans, soldiers, scouts and residents of Gdańsk.
Tusk said that the coming months, autumn and winter could be essential for the war in Ukraine. He appealed for solidarity between the Western states and the assaulted neighbor. He besides cited the Munich Agreement of 1938 as an example of a policy of concessions that did not halt the aggressor.
The comparison has a strong historical basis, but cannot service as a slogan exempting the government from counting Polish costs. In September 1938, Western powers agreed to surrender the Sudeten Country to Germany without Czechoslovakia's participation in the ruling. A fewer months later Hitler broke his promises and took over the Czech Republic. The lesson is clear: a concession without the strength to halt the attacker buys at most a short breath.
Russia is an aggressor, Poland must stay sober
At this point the Prime Minister is right: Russia remains an aggressor, and the triumph of imperial Moscow policy would make Poland's strategical position worse. The defence of Ukraine is in our interest due to the fact that it binds Russian forces distant from the Polish border and makes it hard for the Kremlin to rebuild the subordination region in Central and east Europe. This must not be blurred by organization disputes or false sentimentalism towards Russia.
However, the support for Ukraine does not exempt the Polish authorities from the cost account and guarding their own liabilities. The aid is intended to strengthen the safety of the Republic, not to replace the expansion of the Polish Army, ammunition stocks, air defence and infrastructure resilience. The government should clearly tell Poles what resources we provide, what the intent of the aid is and how we complement our own capabilities. Alliances are needed, but Poland has paid besides advanced a price in past for treating another people's declarations as guarantees already made in practice.
Westerplatte commits to state power
Tusk's speech fell where Polish soldiers resisted the overwhelming German forces for 7 days. Memory of their fight requires concrete. Statement by president Karol Nawrocki on the reparations and reinforcement of the army recalls the second dimension of the anniversary: Germany inactive did not account for the material consequences of its attack on Poland. Support for the assaulted state and the investigation of Polish historical rights are not excluded. Both consequence from the serious treatment of sovereignty.
Words about Munich only make sense erstwhile they lead to real politics. Security of Poland during the war in Ukraine depends on the ready-made individuals, a viable state and allies able to meet their commitments. For Poles, this means spending, giving up and having to control all decision made in the name of solidarity. National realism is not about indifference to aggression. It is essential that all aid besides serves the permanent strengthening of Poland.
