Strengthening defence cooperation between Britain and Turkey is 1 of the most crucial changes in Europe's evolving safety architecture. At the same time, this partnership may reflect the common belief that conventional European safety structures, which have been shaped so far by the EU institutions and the leadership of the US, are no longer adequate to meet the scale and complexity of emerging threats. In this context, a number of bilateral commitments between Ankara and London, above all in the area of arms trafficking and intelligence coordination, are rapidly evolving into a broader strategical agreement, further reinforced by a common perception of threats, complementary defence capabilities as well as convergent geopolitical priorities.
