In southeastern Latvia, at the border with Belarus, an underground tunnel utilized for the illegal smuggling of migrants was discovered. The passage was about 10 metres from the border barrier. So far, migrants have usually penetrated the leaks in the dam or overtaken it.
During the night operation close Dyneburg, the border defender detained 15 people. Migrants had clothes stained with sand. Latvian services began checking the area along the border to find whether there were further tunnels or another unknown passages.
Due to the migratory pressure, the Latvian authorities have launched the Wolfman operation – as part of the joint actions, border guards are to support the military, drones, helicopters and aircraft. Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs called for 24-hour surveillance of the border utilizing drones.
