The line technology course, which is part of the base training at the Commandos Military Unit, is simply a demanding exam to prepare operators for service in combat teams. Soldiers exercise, among others, landing and evacuation from the chopper deck in mountain terrain. Their skills proved invaluable, for example, during rescue actions in 2024, erstwhile the south of Poland ravaged the flood.
Mountain terrain, variable weather and wind in narrow valleys. all maneuver had to be precise and all decision – sure. – At first there were fears related to height, but besides simple ignorance – how it looks in practice. But then everything changes erstwhile the chopper starts. Full concentration, there is no time for fear, even a mistake – says 1 of the students (for safety reasons we do not give the names of the operators of peculiar units).

The classes were conducted both on high-rise objects of the unit and in the area of the Jeleniogórska Basin, where the mountainous terrain only raised the bar. - Mountainous areas, tall trees. We acted in full combat, besides at night, in night vision, with limited visibility. And there was the weather – cold, drizzle. In specified conditions everything is more hard – the student continues.
Air Test
Rope method course It takes 2 weeks, starts with a class on the ground. First, a fewer hours of theoretical part. Reminder of safety rules, parameters of mountaineering equipment, ropes and nodes. Then the tower. “We have 1 of the best altitude facilities in Poland, which allows to simulate the landing from the chopper in controlled conditions,” explains “Mazzi”, JWK instructor. These exercises last about a week. all day is more and more pounds. – First students exercise without load, then there is combat equipment, vest, gun, helmet, NVG backpacks, CBRN equipment. We teach them how to hook up, how to operate with mountaineering equipment, how to behave in an emergency, e.g. erstwhile an aircraft is caught – he adds.
Finally, there comes a minute of entry into the helicopter. – Noise, air gust, vibration, variable height. There is besides the request to execute the task under time pressure. You gotta prepare mentally for this – says 1 of the students. And even the best simulation doesn't give back what's in the air. That is why intellectual preparation is equally important. Experts teach how to cope with stress and control emotions during the course. – Even if individual has passed the selection and has no problem with operation at advanced altitude, then erstwhile landing from the helicopter, they must leave their comfort zone. The hardest part is the first gathering with a helicopter. At first there is stress and uncertainty, but then this approach changes – erstwhile they first fly 120 km/h 300 m above the ground, there is simply a grin – says “Mazzi”.
Exercises conducted in the Jeleniogórska Basin allowed to recreate scenarios akin to operational ones – both in terms of landing and evacuation. besides in conditions where no landing is possible. Operators have perfected 2 basic methods of landing from the air. The Commandos of Ljubljana were 1 of the first to decision with help. – It took 4 hours from the first telephone to ask for support to take off – we prepared equipment, helicopters and moved on. We evacuated residents, besides injured animals – the teacher recalls.
For 2 weeks, they coordinated human transport. They provided medicines, equipment, food and materials utilized to strengthen floodbanks. This experience gained in the crisis has become the starting point for the introduction of a pilot strategy in its unit. “We developed techniques for the big-bag drop – first we landed them in hard-to-access places, and then we directed the drop to the subway to seal the shafts. In time, we performed peculiar tables of standards and duties of line equipment. Before that, we mostly utilized sports equipment. Now we have equipment of military status, intended for operational activities – adds “Mazzi”.
