Spot Jet2, a cheaper British airline, has since the beginning of the summertime become an net phenomenon – a soundtrack with the track Jess Glynn and the characteristic voice of actor Zoe Lister has been utilized in over 2 million social media videos.
Internet users combine it with absurd, comic and chaotic moments from vacation – from fighting in planes, by falling into the sea from a pontoon, to crashing with a seagull on a rollercoaster. The slogan "Nothing beats a Jet2 holiday" became a virale, but no 1 expected them to be utilized in this context... by the US president Donald Trump administration.
Donald Trump's administration uses viral Jet2 advertising to advance deportation
On Wednesday, July 30, a recording appeared on the social media of the White House, showing migrants being handcuffed by ICE agents (American Immigration and Customs Service) aboard the GlobalX aircraft. In the background there is simply a sound from the Jet2 commercial. "When ICE reserves you a one-way vacation with Jet2 – for deportation. Nothing beats it!" – sounds the signature under the film.
It's boiling under the entry. "Disgusting and unprofessional," "Disgusting, deficiency of any empathy," "It's just scandal," "The White home truly put it in?", "I thought it was an account with memes at first," "These are people who have families like you!", "This disgusting usage of social media by the White House. Whoever runs this account should be ashamed," wrote outraged X users. Trump supporters praised the president of the United States for his firm approach to migration.
Artists protest. "I'm sick."
Jess Glynnne herself, author of "Hold My Hand", reacted to the recording. On her Instagram, she wrote, "I feel sick that the White home utilized this clip with my song to advance deportation. My music is about love, unity and spreading affirmative energy – never about divisions or hatred".
Zoe Lister, an actor whose voice appears in advertising, spoke equally harshly. – I would never agree to my voiceover being utilized to advance something like Trump and his disgusting politics. This Jet2 meme brought people quite a few joy and humor all over the world, but the White home video shows that Trump has no of these two," she said in a conversation with the BBC.
Earlier, Lister stressed that she did not want politicians to usage this sound. – This is not the climate – this video is expected to be funny, show absurd things that happen to us. erstwhile individual serious, like a politician, uses it to advance his program, this is not something I agree with," she added.
Trump vs. Music: a long dispute with artists about rights to works
As the BBC reminds us, this is not the first time the Trump administration has utilized music or memes for political purposes – frequently without the consent of artists. In July a post appeared with a reworkment in which the President's face was imposed on Superman's body from a fresh film, with the signature: "Truth. Justice. American road. Superman Trump".
On a wave of criticism, the administration published a eloquent graphics with the inscription, "Nowhere in the Constitution is it written that we cannot post large memes."
The list of musicians who protested Trump's usage of their works is long. In the summertime of 2023, the ABBA squad asked to remove recordings from election rallies, where 1 could hear, among others, "The Winner Takes It All". Sinéad O'Connor's heirs besides reacted, writing that the artist would be "disgusted, hurt and offended" by specified usage of her work.
Adele already distanced herself from Trump in 2016 after utilizing her "Rolling In The Deep" as a track beginning her election meetings, and Steven Tyler's lawyers from Aerosmith sent a letter demanding that they halt playing "Dream On" at political rallies.
The White home has not so far referred to the criticism of Glynn and Lister. The BBC besides contacted Jet2 about this, but the company did not comment.
