Has Ukrainian tarantula appeared in Poland? The expert explains where the anxiety came from
Information about the appearance of Ukrainian tarantula in east parts of Poland has been circulating on the net since 2019. This started with statements by Dr. Piotr Bębas from the Faculty of Biology of the University of Warsaw, who at TOK FM said that Ukrainian tarantulas can be met even in Bieszczady. A fewer months later, however, another specialist corrected it.
Lycosa singoriensis in Poland has never performed and inactive does not occur. There are no technological reports or another evidence in the form of collected specimens, photographs or reliable observations
- assured Dr. Robert Rozwalka in a conversation with Virtual Poland. In 2022 the performance of the Ukrainian tarantula in Poland was besides denied by Dr. Łukasz Trębicki from the Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection of the University of Łódź in an interview with natemat.pl. This was late referred to by Jakub Kilijanek, an expert in the area of spiders, who confirmed that nothing has changed since 2022 and it is inactive impossible to conclude that Lycosa singoriensis is present in our country. In addition, the spider would most likely have a problem overcoming natural obstacles, including the mentioned Bieszczady. So why all the rumors? Kilijanek is convinced that this is due to the similarity of the Ukrainian tarantula to the species that can actually be encountered here.
The Ukrainian tarantula (South-Russian) is very frequently confused with national spider representatives from the same household (e.g. Arctos, Alopecosa) and even another families and genera specified as Agelenidae – Eratigena, Tegenaria (angles) and Agelena; Dolomedidae – Dolomedes (baggites) or even Gnaphosidae (bovine)
- explained the expert in March 2025 in an interview with RMF MAXX. On the another hand, a gathering with the Ukrainian tarantula may end unpleasantly, although there are frequently exaggerations here.
Is Ukrainian tarantula dangerous? But if we met her, it would be better to be careful.
The Ukrainian tarantula is frequently portrayed as an highly aggressive spider that attacks people, but this is not entirely true. The spider may attack us, but he will do so in self-defense or by mistake.
Of course, in violation of the spider's nest, there is simply a advanced probability that the spider will bite us, confusing, for example, our finger with a moving insect (i.e. possible prey), however, specified situations are so sporadic that they should not be treated as a generality and as individual cases
- convinces the Killians. The fact is that it is simply a venomous spider - like all another spider species. Fortunately, Lycosa singoriensis venom does not pose a threat to man, and bite will consequence in redness and pain.
