Flexible visa policies have helped boost tourist numbers, putting Malaysia ahead of destinations like Indonesia and Thailand as Asia’s most-visited country in the first three months of this year.

Tourism Growth in Malaysia

This increase is primarily attributed to the new visa relaxation policies, making Malaysia a leading destination in Southeast Asia.

In an exclusive interview with Bernama, Malaysia’s Home Minister announced an extension to its visa policy for Chinese travelers for another five years, with an option to renew it further until 2036.

This policy adjustment has gained Malaysia a significant rise in Chinese visitors since 2023, as cited in Malay Mail.

Moreover, the Malaysian government plans to partner with online influencers through popular social media platforms, like WeChat, further expanding its reach within the tourism sector.

The Malaysian Tourism data, as cited by VN Express, reveals that Singapore tops the list in Malaysia’s international visitors, with more than 4.9 million Singaporeans visiting Malaysia during the first three months of 2025.

China ranked as the second-largest tourism source with 1.12 million visitors, adding to Malaysia’s visitor numbers.

Indonesia followed next, contributing 1.08 million travelers to the country’s tourism figure. These international visitor numbers strongly illustrate Malaysia’s appeal among diverse cultural backgrounds across different continents.
