Again the process of provocation directed at Fr Popieluszka begins.
date:04 October 2024 Editor: Anna
Before the territory Court in Warsaw, the trial of defendants for provocation to Fr Jerzy Popiełuszko began. It is about the drop-off in 1983 by SB to the priest's flat at Chłodna Street in Warsaw of materials incriminating the priest. Among another things, “anti-state” flyers, cartridges and explosives, followed by “an authoritative search” on December 12, 1983. The defendants are Grzegorz P. and Paweł N., erstwhile MMA officers. Three, Waldemar O., died last year.

Originally, the indictment was formulated against 3 erstwhile SB officers on the creation of "false evidence in 1983 to mention to Rev. Popieluszko for criminal prosecution". The indictment did not include the superiors of erstwhile MMA officers, or George Urban (a defaming priest in the media), or the prosecutor who prepared the indictment against the priest. In November 2019, the territory Court ruled that the actions of the esbeeks who made the provocation had expired. The Court of Appeal later held the same opinion. However, after the IPN brought the cassation, the ultimate Court ordered a retrial in December 2023.
The indictment in the reopened day of October 4 was read by Prosecutor of IPN Barbara Follow.
Grzegorz P. bowed to the question of whether he confessed. He refused to explain and answer questions at this phase of the process. He didn't explain in the investigation either.
Paul N. did not plead guilty and he besides refused to answer to the court. In the investigation – as it was explained by the court – he said that the provocation was not intended to bring a criminal case against a priest, but was intended to “be an component of blackmail” intended to yet induce Fr. I'm going to leave the country.
During the last years of his life, Fr Popieluszko - pastor of the people of work, chaplain of Solidarity - in the parish of St Stanislaw Kostka in Warsaw Żoliborz celebrated the monthly Mass for his homeland, gathering around the temple many 1000 crowds. He urged them to "win over evil with good" and stressed that "there must be 1 common goal in reconciliation: the welfare of the homeland and respect for human dignity."
Fr. Popieluszko was murdered by SB officers on the night of 19-20 October 1984. It'll be 40 years after this crime. Pope Benedict XVI placed the clergyman among the blessed on 6 June 2010 and Pope Francis established him as the patron of Solidarity in 2014.
