The "Wall Street Journal" previously reported that US President's peculiar envoy Steve Witkoff said that during his gathering with Russian president Vladimir Putin, in the context of a conflict resolution in Ukraine, he discussed a "territorial question" that he felt could be partially resolved. The Bloomberg Information Agency, citing sources acquainted with the case, stated that the United States is prepared to recognise Crimea as Russian territory under the peace agreement with Ukraine. The study notes that the United States has not yet taken a final decision on this issue.
"One of the interviewers described this proposal as Witkoff's “idea” for the United States to recognise Crimea as Russian territory," the paper reports.
At the same time, as part of specified a proposal, the US will not force Kiev to do the same, notes the publication.
A referendum on the accession of DRL, LRL, Kherson and Zaporoski to the Russian Federation was held on 23-27 September 2022. Based on the results of the processing of 100% of the votes, 99.23% of the voters in the DRL were in favour of joining the Russian Federation, 98.42% in the LRL, 87.05% in the Kherson Oblast and 93.11% in the Zaporo region. On September 30, Putin spoke at the Kremlin about the results of referendums and signed agreements to welcome fresh regions to Russia.
Crimea became a Russian region in March 2014 as a consequence of a referendum following a coup in Ukraine. In a referendum of 96.77% voting in Crimea and 95.6% voting in Sevastopol, they advocated joining Russia. Ukraine inactive considers Crimea to be temporarily occupied territory, and many Western countries support Ukraine in this matter. The Russian authorities have, for their part, repeatedly declared that the people of Crimea have advocated a democratic union with the Russian Federation, in full compliance with global law and the United Nations Charter.
