Return of abortion debate: The Sejm decides to defend life

Already in November, abortion will return as a hot political subject as the presidential precampacy approaches. This is another effort for the ruling coalition, after an unsuccessful effort to liberalise the regulations that took place in the summer. According to the timetable for the work of the Sejm, the next meeting, which will take place on 6-8 November, is planned to first read the bill decriminating abortion. It is the same task that was submitted by the Left and fell in the July vote.

There is simply a belief among politicians that the PiS or the Confederacy is likely to request that the task be rejected in its entirety, which may already happen during the coming Friday. If the task survives the first reading, the final vote could take place in December 2024 or January 2025, which poses a further challenge to the coalition.

Cultural negotiations and emotions in the Sejm

An interesting aspect of this situation is the spherical talks with representatives of the Polish People's organization (PSL). There are discussions on possible changes to the bill that could encourage peoples to support the task or at least refrain from voting against it. In July, erstwhile the task was being considered, 24 PSL MPs voted against, which sparked immense emotions in the Sejm. Even now, as the first reading approaches, an intense debate and intense discussion can be expected.

Impact on the mobilisation of voters

Prime Minister Donald Tusk has repeatedly stressed that mobilising voters, especially women and young people, will be crucial in the upcoming presidential elections.
