In the second circular of the repeated presidential election in Romania on 18 May, Nicușor Dan won. This independent, pro-European centre-right politician who is in favour of further support for Ukraine won 53.6% of the votes. In this way, he defeated George Simion, the leader of the national-conservative Union of Romanians (AUR), who was hostile to Kyiv and linked to the American MAGA ("Make America large Again") movement, and who called for greater independency of nation states in the EU.
