More deaths than births, but a affirmative migration balance - the population of Germany has increased somewhat again.

The population increase compared to 2023 was 0.1 percent, equivalent to 121,000 people, stated the national Statistical Office in Wiesbaden on Friday (20 June). This was the consequence of an excess migration – this means that more people came to the country than they left. Data besides show that more people died in Germany one more time than they were born.

The population grew unevenly in 2024. In the Western Länder, the population increased by 0.2% or 136 1000 to 67.5 million compared to the erstwhile year. In turn, the east trade union countries, excluding Berlin, recorded a decrease of 0.3 percent, or by 38,000 to 12.4 million.

The East Is Depopulating

Among the national states with the largest losses of the population was Thuringia. The population fell by 0.7 percent, or 15,000 people. The following places included Saxony with a decrease of 0.3 percent (12 thousand) and Saxony-Anhalt with a decrease of 9,000, corresponding to 0.4 percent. Bavaria, on the another hand, recorded the largest population growth, by 73,000.

According to preliminary data, the migration surplus fell from 660,000 to 420,000 compared to the erstwhile year, but remained clearly positive. On the another hand, the population of the permanent population fell again due to the fact that there were more deaths than births. Surplus deaths were 330 000 and were akin to 2023.

The number of foreigners is growing

According to the national Office, the number of abroad populations increased by 283,000 in 2024, or 2.3 percent to 12.4 million. As a result, the percent of foreigners rose from 14.5 percent at the end of 2023 to 14.8 percent at the end of 2024. However, these proportions vary according to age group: The percent of foreigners is highest in the 20-59 age group is 19.7 percent and the lowest in the 60+ age group is 6.3 percent. Among children and adolescents under the age of 20, the percent of foreigners is 15.4 percent.

As in erstwhile years, the largest group of foreigners are Turks (1,403,000), followed by Ukrainian citizens (1,085,000), Syria (889,000), Romania (771,000) and Poland (723,000).
