The mysterious Gogol. Ukrainian? Russian? Pole? Or possibly gay?

"The Riddle of Gogol" by Sylvia Frolov is something more than an extended biography of the author of "The Inspector". It introduces the political and cultural past of Ukrainians and Russians, and by the way Poles, in the first half of the nineteenth century. Out of love for Orthodoxy, the author starved himself to death.
