Introduction:

The title of Hanna Krall's interview with Mark Edelman – “Get ahead of God” – is full of symbolism, shows the possible of a race in which man tries to overtake the Creator's movement (and thus save human life). This imagination accompanied Edelman both during the war, erstwhile he was escorting 400,000 people to the Umschlagplatz, and later – erstwhile he began working in the hospital. Both aspects of the race with God have many features in common; they disagree in the drama of the situation, but they prosecute the same: postponement of judgment.

Develop ("Get ahead of God"):

Marek Edelman felt that the fight for life was an effort to defeat God – erstwhile he wanted to extinguish the candle, then the Creator's indiscretion should be utilized to shield the flame. The main character of the interview conducted by Hanna Krall both during the war and later engaged in saving human life. While in the Warsaw ghetto, Edelman experienced many atrocities of war: he saw dead bodies lying on the streets, he knew the communicative of Rywka Urman, who starved off a part of her dead child's body. The later doctor saw the agony and demeaning of the judaic ghetto, and he had a twofold attitude toward life and death. On the 1 hand, he tried to save people (he pulled Pola Lifszyc out of the way towards the Umschlagplatz), on the another hand – he thought that the only way to save the dignity of life was to decide about his own death. The race in the fight for life was not about facing God himself – alternatively it was an effort to escape Germany; if it was not possible to avoid death, 1 had to die with dignity, not in a way...
