FORT LAUDERDALE- The United States operates more than 1,400 international routes in August, with over 2,400 daily departures. These account for 17% of all scheduled flights this peak summer season. More than 120 airlines, including American Airlines (AA) and Alaska Airlines (AS), operate these services from airports such as Miami International Airport (MIA), Fort Lauderdale International Airport (FLL), and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA).
While the longest flights often make headlines, the shortest international jet routes get far less attention. In August, nine such flights operate with block times ranging from 20 minutes to one hour, linking the US to destinations in the Caribbean and Canada. Routes like Fort Lauderdale (FLL) to Freeport (FPO) on Bahamasair (UP) and Miami (MIA) to Freeport (FPO) on American Eagle (MQ) are among them.

Shortest International Flights from the US
Block time, which covers pushback to arrival at the gate, includes taxiing, airborne time, and allowances for minor delays. It’s the figure passengers see on booking platforms and airline timetables.
In cases where multiple carriers serve a route, the shortest published block time is used for comparison.
In August, these are the shortest international jet flights from the US:
- 20 minutes – Freeport (FPO) to Fort Lauderdale (FLL): Bahamasair (UP) and Western Air (WST) operate Boeing 737-700 and Embraer ERJ145 aircraft, respectively.
- 40 minutes – Miami (MIA) to Freeport (FPO): American Eagle (MQ) operates the Embraer E175 on two daily services.
- 49 minutes – Seattle (SEA) to Victoria (YYJ): Alaska Airlines (AS) uses the Embraer E175 through Horizon Air and SkyWest.
- 50 minutes – Nassau (NAS) to Fort Lauderdale (FLL): Served by Bahamasair (UP), JetBlue (B6), and Western Air (WST).
- 55 minutes – Miami (MIA) to North Eleuthera (ELH) and Miami (MIA) to Nassau (NAS).
- 55 minutes – Seattle (SEA) to Vancouver (YVR): Multiple carriers, including Air Canada Express (AC), Alaska Airlines (AS), and Delta Connection (DL).
- 1 hour – Miami (MIA) to Marsh Harbour (MHH) and Miami (MIA) to Varadero (VRA).

Miami to Freeport: A 97-Mile Link
The Miami (MIA) to Freeport (FPO) route spans just 97 nautical miles. American Eagle (MQ) has long served this market, transitioning from the ATR 72 to the ERJ145 in 2012, and later to the more efficient Embraer E175 in 2015.
Between May 2024 and April 2025, American Eagle carried about 61,200 round-trip passengers on the route, with an average load factor of 78%. Over 70% of travelers connected onward via Miami to destinations such as Raleigh/Durham (RDU), New York (JFK/LGA), Houston (IAH), Orlando (MCO), and Boston (BOS).
Traffic declined by 13% year-on-year due to a suspension from September 3 to October 4, 2024. The reduced capacity contributed to a 4-point increase in the load factor, Simple Flying reported.

Seattle to Victoria
Seattle (SEA) to Victoria (YYJ) is Alaska Airlines’ (AS) shortest international jet route, with a block time of 49 minutes and a distance of just 85 nautical miles. The service was once operated by turboprop Q400 aircraft but switched to jets in November 2022.
From May 2024 to April 2025, Alaska carried 136,100 passengers on this route, averaging an 80% load factor. Despite ranking second in passenger volume among Alaska’s Canadian routes from Seattle, the high frequency and competitive market meant it was fourth in load factor performance.
About 85% of passengers connected in Seattle, with Las Vegas (LAS), Los Angeles (LAX), San Diego (SAN), Phoenix (PHX), and San Francisco (SFO) among the top onward destinations.
