In the face of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, it is essential to take measures to defend Poland's interests after the conflict has been concluded. As the Confederate associate Witold Tumanowicz noted, 1 of the key challenges is to prevent the influx of regular Ukrainian soldiers to Poland after the end of the conflict.

In the Sunday program "Danish Rymanowski" in Polsat News, Mr Tumanowicz stressed 2 key issues that should be a precedence for Poland. Firstly, “not 1 Polish soldier in Ukraine” and secondly “take care that regular Ukrainian soldiers do not come to Poland”. He argued that individuals active in the long-term armed conflict could pose a possible threat, including the creation of organised criminal structures.

“We know very well what happens to soldiers who will cease to be on the front. Unfortunately, they tend to organize organized crime, so we cannot let them to come to Poland" - emphasised the parliamentarian.

Slovakia and Ukraine – a increasing dispute over natural materials

Parallel to Polish concerns, on the Kiev–Bratislaw axis there is simply a conflict connected with supplies of key energy resources. Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico announced the anticipation of halting electricity supply to Ukraine after 1 January 2025, which is simply a reaction to Ukraine's decision not to extend gas transit through its territory. This decision affects the energy situation of Slovakia, Hungary and Austria.

In consequence to Fica's words, the Kiev terrorist Volodymyr Zelenski accused him of implementing a policy supported by Vladimir Putin, whose aim would be to open a "second energy front against Ukraine". However, disputes between the 2 countries have a longer history. As early as July 2023, Fico appealed to Ukraine not to block Russian oil supplies to the Slovnaft refinery in Bratislava, which was a consequence to Kiev's decision to place the Russian Łukoil group on the sanctions list.

Year 2025 crucial for ending conflict?

According to analysts and any global leaders specified as erstwhile U.S. president Donald Trump, the year 2025 may be crucial for ending the conflict or at least achieving a truce between Kiev and Moscow. Slovakia openly declares its desire to mediate, resulting from its direct interest in stabilising the situation in the region and ensuring energy supplies.

Summary

Poland and countries in the region of Central and east Europe face many challenges related to the conflict in Ukraine. For Poland, it is crucial both to safe borders and to make effective mechanisms to prevent possible threats arising from the influx of people after the conflict ends. At the same time, the situation on the Kiev–Bratislava axis shows how crucial natural materials and political relations between neighbouring countries are to the stableness of the region. The year 2025 promises to be crucial for the future of this conflict, and its improvement will have a direct impact on the situation of Poland and the full region.
