Ministers of the Interior of Poland and Germany during their visit to the border with Belarus stressed the importance of protecting the EU's external border in an effective fight against illegal migration.

"The fight against illegal migration must take place at the external borders of the European Union. We are doing everything to halt illegal migrants here, so that they do not get to Poland, Germany and another countries," said Tomasz Siemoniak on Monday at the closed border crossing with Belarus Połówka - Pieszczka.

The head of the Polish Ministry of Interior met with German Minister Alexander Dobrindt there to show him the fortification strategy on the Polish-Belarusian border. The 2 ministers last Friday, together with colleagues from the Czech Republic, Austria, France, Denmark, attended the migration summit in Bavaria, where a declaration on the fight against illegal migration was adopted.

Siemoniak emphasized that the Polish government spent PLN 2.6 billion on the construction of the dam. Borders with Belarus are guarded by 11,000 officers and soldiers. The barrier strategy has late been extended to water areas. The effectiveness of the dam is estimated at 97-98 percent," added the head of the Polish Ministry of Interior.

Common nonsubjective – order and security

“It connects to a common goal – we want order and safety within Europe and the hardness and consequences at the external borders of Europe to defend it,” Dobrindt said. He thanked the Polish authorities for "great achievements" in securing the border. He stressed that he was "excited" by his efforts to halt the influx of illegal migrants. "We can admire here how the protection of the external border is becoming more effective," German politician said. Polish services are able to "stop all illegal migrants," he added.

Dobrindt advocated expanding EU aid to Poland. In his opinion, the aid should cover both financial and logistical support and, above all, appreciation of the efforts made by the Polish authorities.

The head of the German Ministry of Interior ensured that the checks at the German borders would be limited in time. "Our goal remains the European Union without interior controls," he pointed out. Improving the protection of external borders is simply a prerequisite for the abolition of interior controls – explained the Bavarian CSU policy.

Poland will quit control if Germany resigns

Siemoniak assured that if the German side gave up control, "we will not control either". 'So far', the existing arrangements – suspension of the right to asylum, buffer region and border controls are to be extended.

Dobrindt and Siemoniak advocated close cooperation in migration policy. – Migration problems are common. 1 country will never solve these problems at the expense of another (country) in the EU. We gotta solve them together – said the Polish minister.

Innuendos

Dobrindt commented on the allegations in Poland that German authorities have been massing illegal migrants into Poland for years in Germany. "Such claims are offensive and have no factual basis," said the German minister. The authors of these claims "try to disrupt good Polish-German relations". "This is irresponsible," Dobrindt said. As he pointed out, Poland is next to France the most crucial partner of Germany in Europe.

In support of these words, Siemoniak gave the figures from which it appeared that in 2023, during the regulation of the Law and Justice, Germany sent back to Poland 12 1000 people "with a Belarusian trail" – migrants who had entered Germany from Belarus through Poland. In 2024 there were 5,000 of them, and in the first half of that year only 800.

Where's the conflict going?

– erstwhile problems arise, we discuss them and rapidly find a solution. (...) We will not let our relation to be broken by false innuendos," Dobrindt said. The people of Europe want solidarity, not divisions," he added.

Siemoniak referred to the words of PiS president Jarosław Kaczyński, who said that at both borders of Poland – east and western battles are taking place. – The conflict for the Polish border, the EU border is fought here where we are. The Polish-German border is the border of allies and partners," said the head of the Polish MMA.

From the Polish-Belarusian border, Dobrindt and Siemoniak went to Copenhagen for an EU gathering of Home Ministers. Denmark holds the Presidency of the European Union in this six months.
