Hama is simply a city of 700,000 inhabitants and the 4th largest city of Syria after Damascus, Aleppo and Tartus. Following the fast takeover by the Aleppo rebels in the north of the country, there was a massive retreat of the Syrian army towards Hama, and it seemed that it was there that the loyalists would effort to halt the further march of the rebels south.
