Syria - another Putin policy defeat [COMMENTARY]

Starting his intervention in Syria in 2015, Putin set himself respective political and military goals. The Russian troops were primarily to defend Assad, who was in fact the only and last ally of Russia in the mediate East. Thanks to the Taurus base in Syria, Russians besides had direct access to the Mediterranean Sea, as well as a consecutive way to the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf. The Syrian operation was besides crucial for propaganda reasons, showing the “power” of Russian soldiers and the “modern” weapons they use.
