KPRP / X / @presidentOn Tuesday, September 1, 2026, during the state celebrations of the 87th anniversary of the outbreak of planet War II at Westerplatte, president Karol Nawrocki called on the authorities of the national Republic of Germany to pay compensation to Poland.
The head of state linked the issue of war reparations to financing the modernization of the Polish Armed Forces and the national defence industry, stressing the request to avoid external debt:
"A real, tough, allied declaration towards Poland requires our allies from Berlin and our neighbours to pay us the compensation that Poland will give to Polish armed forces, to the Polish arms industry. So we don't gotta take western credits, so we get what we deserve. I appeal, from Westerplatte, to the Chancellor of Germany, to the German people: let us settle the substance of reparation and redress with a view to historical justice, but besides with a view to the future."
The speech referred to the President's earlier March conversation with Chancellor Friedrich Merzem and to the task announced together with the National Bank of Poland "Polish SAFE 0 percent", assuming a gain of PLN 185 billion for the acquisition of weapons without interest charges.
Speech by Prime Minister Donald Tusk and the issue of support for Ukraine
The global situation and the ongoing war in Ukraine were addressed during the ceremony by Prime Minister Donald Tusk, pointing out the upcoming challenges to the region's military security:
"Here, at Westerplatte we must say it out loud: the coming months, this autumn and winter that are ahead of us, may be crucial to Ukraine's independence, but besides to the safety of Poland, the full free world."
The head of government called on the Allied States to supply clear and lasting assistance to Kiev, informing against the policy of concessions:
"With 80 million victims of planet War II remembered, 6 million victims of Polish citizens, remembering the execution of almost all Jews in Europe by mad Nazis... Today, with Westerplatte we shout loudly to the full free world: be solidist, we must aid last Ukraine today. We cannot repeat those mistakes, we cannot repeat Munich, this ghastly, helpless, powerless policy of yielding to evil."
