The territory Court in Warsaw on 28 August 2026 dismissed proceedings against Mieszko R. on the execution of 53-year-old employees of the Warsaw University of May 2025. The experts found the 22-year-old to be insane, so there will be no criminal trial. At the same time, the court decided to place him in a closed intellectual institution.

The court took into account the prosecution's request

The territory Court of Warsaw took into account on Friday the prosecutor's request to discontinue proceedings against Mieszko R. The reason was the insanity of a 22-year-old at the time of his actions, as reported by expert psychiatrists after judicial and psychiatric observation. The decision was notified after the gathering by his proxy.

Derogation means that there will be no criminal trial leading to conviction or acquittal. However, it does not mean going out of Apartments R. to freedom. The court applied a safety measurement in the form of a closed psychiatric facility and extended the temporary arrest until 7 January 2027. The order is not valid.

Attorney Jacek Potulski explained that the stay in the plant was not determined in advance for a circumstantial number of years. all six months, the court shall measure whether the continued application of the safeguard measurement is justified. It's judicial control over isolation and treatment, not an automatic release date.

Tragedy on campus

The execution took place on 7 May 2025 on the campus of the University of Warsaw. According to the findings presented in the proceedings, a 22-year-old law student then attacked an axe with a 53-year-old porter as she closed the doors of the Auditorium Maximum. The female died instantly.

A 39-year-old worker of the UW defender went to help. He was besides attacked and in severe condition went to hospital, but survived. Mieszko R. heard allegations of execution with peculiar cruelty, attempted execution of a defender and insulting the body. He was detained immediately after the event.

For the loved ones of a dead woman, no decision will undo the loss. At the heart of the substance lies her death and the suffering of the man who tried to help. The description of the proceedings must preserve this proportion and not turn the tragedy into a spectacle.

Unmentionableness and Criminal Responsibility

The court's decision was based on the opinion of experts, according to which Mieszko R. at the time of his actions was in a state of serious psychosis and could not bear criminal liability under average rules. In accordance with Article 31(1) of the Criminal Code, a criminal offender does not commit a criminal offence and is not punishable, although the court determines whether he has committed the alleged act and whether a public protection measurement is necessary.

Closed psychiatric facility serves to treat and defend against dangerous behavior. It is not a prison penalty, but constitutes a real isolation controlled by the court. Therefore, the abbreviated claim that the dismissal of the proceeding means no consequences misleads the recipients.

This case leaves you a serious responsibility: to defend people, to supply treatment to a individual deemed insane and to regularly measure risks without succumbing to media pressure. The safety of Poles requires efficient institutions, reliable expert opinions and decisions of the court based on the law. The memory of the victim requires silence, respect, and truth.
