date:30 January 2025 Editor: Anna
Censorship changes face, but its goal remains the same – the regulation of our freedom! "History of censorship" – the latest book by Jakub Maciejewski becomes a modern textbook for its understanding. Now that censorship returns with double force and freedom of speech is suppressed in the name of “political correctness” and the convenience of the system, this reading peculiarly opens eyes and shows the scale of what we are dealing with. The book exposes the brutal fact about a planet where the more freedom we are assured, the more secret restrictions are imposed in this sphere.
"The Censor was never as anonymous as today, and of course so cunning and possessing specified powerful tools. The present will should be separated from freedom of illusion" – Jakub Maciejewski writes in the introduction of his book.

This respected writer and historian of the young generation with quite a few temperament draws the censorship from its beginning to its present day, not only in Poland. It reaches to ancient times, then overthrows a fewer myths related to the mediate Ages or the Renaissance, explains the difference between church censorship and secular censorship, but, of course, it devotes the most space to its country. During the past 2 centuries, Poles have struggled with absolutely enforced anti-national, but besides anti-religious censorship applied to us by strangers (collectors, communists). However, fewer books have been produced on this subject, and this is the first comprehensive study.
Is the subject of censorship always uncomfortable and censored? – Maciejewski asks.
The author gives the reader a circumstantial key to knowing modern tools and methods of censorship on an unprecedented scale – by simply utilizing algorithms on social media. On the another hand, he is considering the problem of where the boundary between freedom of expression and its anarchy is, between freedom of speech and its abuse, between enrichment of public debate and its depletedness or even primitiveisation.
The reader will face facts and specifics, all to show censorship in all its splendor – including humiliation of the author, reader and yet the censor itself. Jakub Maciejewski rightly notes that the censor that interferes with the content of the work becomes his false co-author, diverges in his ideas and solutions from the original. This problem has not disappeared, in form more or little hidden inactive exists today.
The "history of censorship" is read perfectly, and the comparison of what erstwhile generations have struggled with the current state allows us to reflect and reevaluate our approach to the content that today's media feeds us, especially electronic ones.
