What is the 5th domain and why is NATO investing in its development? Which countries are the leaders in space technology development? What are the modern dangers of extraterrestrial activity? What function does the NATO discipline and Technology Organisation (NATO STO) play in safety and innovation investigation in space? These and many another questions will be answered with our guest.
Space has long ceased to be just a place of technological exploration – present it is besides a key area of global safety strategy. The increasing importance of satellites, reflection technologies and communication systems makes many countries invest in the improvement of defence space capabilities. NATO, noticing these changes, considered extraterrestrial space to be its 5th operational domain, alongside land, sea, air and cyberspace.
During the gathering with Dr. Radosław Bielawski, we will talk about:
what space safety is and why NATO treats space as a strategical area of action;
which countries are leading the improvement of space military technologies and what are the reasons for this dominance;
what risks may arise from activities in space and how they are classified;
How the NATO discipline and Technology Organization works and how it supports investigation and improvement of innovative solutions specified as dual-use space technologies dual-use technologies) and innovative solutions for microdrives in tiny spacecraft.
The gathering is organised within the framework of the European challenge CanSatwhere primary and secondary school students make space probe simulators. Participation in the challenge is simply a chance for young people to experience a unique adventure! Its participants will go through all stages of an breathtaking investigation project: from the conception of the cansata mission concept and the choice and plan of its instruments, through promotional and educational activities, the acquisition of partners and sponsors, and the integration of mini-satellite components, to investigating its prototypes, preparing it for launch and yet analyzing data.
The gathering will consist of 3 parts.
- Presentation of the European challenge of CanSat.
- Conversation with an expert, Dr. Radosław Bielawski.
- Question and Answer Session.

Dr. Radosław Bielawski – safety expert. He presently serves as staff officer for planning and coordination at the NATO Cooperation Support Office for discipline and Technology (Collaboration Support Office of NATO discipline & Technology Organization – CSO NATO STO) based in Paris. In his technological work, he identifies space threats of a military and non-military nature, as well as militarization of space. His technological portfolio besides includes technological investigation on fresh and breakthrough technologies on military applications.
