ANCHORAGE— Southwest Airlines (WN) has officially announced its entry into Alaska, unveiling plans to launch new flights to Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC). The Dallas-based carrier said Thursday that the service would begin in the first half of 2026.

These services will start no later than June and are expected to offer direct routes from Denver International Airport (DEN) and Harry Reid International Airport (LAS).

Southwest Airlines Adds Alaska Flights

Southwest confirmed that it would release the full schedule for the new Anchorage flights later in October. The addition of ANC marks one of several expansions this year, alongside:

  • McGhee Tyson Airport (TYS) in Tennessee
  • St. Maarten’s Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM)
  • St. Thomas’ Cyril E. King International Airport (STT) in the U.S. Virgin Islands
  • Sonoma County Airport (STS) in California.

Each of these airports will officially join the Southwest route network in 2026, giving the carrier new coverage across the mainland U.S., the Caribbean, and the Pacific coast, reported The Points Guy.

Growing competition in Anchorage

Southwest’s new ANC flights will put it in direct competition with Alaska Airlines (AS), the region’s largest carrier.

According to data from aviation analytics firm Cirium, Alaska Airlines already operates flights between Anchorage and both Denver and Las Vegas. United Airlines (UA) also serves the Anchorage–Denver route, meaning competition will be particularly strong on this corridor.

Despite the challenges, Southwest is banking on its low-cost structure and brand loyalty to carve out market share.

Anchorage, with its mix of tourism and local travel demand, offers significant seasonal potential, especially during peak summer months when passenger numbers surge.

Major Changes Underway

Southwest recently announced the introduction of baggage fees, marking a departure from its long-standing free-bags policy. In addition, it will transition to assigned seating in January 2026, including premium seating options with extra legroom.

The inclusion of ANC connects two of the airline’s key hubs—Denver and Las Vegas—to Alaska, making it easier for travelers across the U.S. to access the state through convenient one-stop connections.

The carrier’s growth aligns with its strategy of offering affordable fares while gradually moving toward features traditionally offered by larger network airlines. As more details are released in October, travelers will gain clarity on exact flight frequencies and schedules.

Bottom Line

Southwest Airlines’ entry into Anchorage signals a bold step in its 2025–2026 expansion strategy.

The competition with Alaska Airlines and United Airlines will test its ability to compete in an already crowded market, but the move strengthens its growing reputation as a carrier willing to adapt and evolve.
