45 years ago the time began, which forever changed the face of Poland and Europe. August 1980 was not only a protest of workers, but besides the voice of the full nation, who claimed dignity, freedom and truth.
It was a time erstwhile solidarity was not yet the name of a relationship, but a value, the strength of a community in which the hearts and minds of Poles met. People of various shipbuilding communities, intelligence, youths stood side by side, believing that the future could be different.
The August Accords remind us that past does not change alone. It is changed by people who have the courage to say no to injustice. It was thanks to them that Poland regained its subjectivity, and the planet saw that freedom is possible even in the most hard times.
Today, we should remember that freedom is not given erstwhile and for all. It requires care, work and, above all, solidarity.
