Thousands gathered in Gdańsk on 7 February 2025 to protest EU climate policy. The “Solidarity” demonstration took place before the European Solidarity Centre, where the gathering of Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen took place. The president of the union, Piotr Duda, did not dress up in words, criticizing both EU Commissioners and the Polish government for actions that hit Polish workers, farmers and industry.

Three fast facts:

  1. Protest in a historical Place “The demonstration took place before the European Solidarity Centre in Gdańsk, the cradle of the Solidarity movement.
  2. Sharp opposition to Green Deal – According to trade unionists, EU climate policy is an assassination of Polish manufacture and households.
  3. Call for a referendum – Piotr Duda called on Prime Minister Tusk to hold a national referendum on Green Deal.

"Wishers from Europe" and Polish government under fire "Solidarity"

During the speech, Piotr Duda powerfully attacked the European Commission and Donald Tusk's government, calling them “wreckers” who introduce solutions that harm Poles. He criticised the EU's climate policy, which, in his opinion, hit industry, mines and everyday lives of citizens.

According to the leader of Solidarity, Green Deal is simply a political task that has nothing to do with environmental protection. Its main nonsubjective is to weaken the Polish economy for Germany. Duda stressed that it was Solidarity that warned against the consequences of this policy since 2007.

Call for a referendum and prosecution against Tusk

One of the main demands of the demonstration was the call for a national referendum on Green Deal. The Head of Solidarity addressed Prime Minister Donald Tusk directly, saying:

Prime Minister, we are in the end of collecting signatures for the Green Deal referendum. delight announce as Prime Minister of the Government in the Sejm that we are starting a referendum on this matter. Then you will become a credible person.

Duda stressed that if the Prime Minister truly sees the threat of Green Deal, he should put his future to the vote of the citizens. Otherwise, his words will only be part of the political game before the presidential election.

Workers in different industries say “enough”

The demonstration was attended by representatives of many professions – farmers, miners, metallurgists, railway workers and wellness services. According to trade unionists, EU regulations lead to the collapse of workplaces, collective redundancies and drastic increases in energy prices.

Duda warned that fresh regulations specified as the ETS2 strategy and the Building Directive would be another blow for Poles. The fresh EU government may mean additional taxes on gas, coal and fuel oil, which will affect the costs of heating homes.
