Slovak president-elect made a message on relations with the EU and NATO

Slovakia will proceed to focus on the European Union and NATO, while remaining a associate of these organisations, but will act more independently erstwhile making decisions – the head of the Slovak Parliament Peter Pellegrini, who won the presidential election, assured the RTVS on TV.

"I can warrant all Slovak citizens that the republic is firmly anchored in the European Union and NATO. No 1 can change the course of our abroad policy, but I confirm that in these organisations we must act more independently, we must make our voice heard. We must argue if any decisions have a negative impact on Slovakia, our economy or people surviving here. Our focus on the European Union and NATO is clear, but on the another hand we must look in all directions," Pellegrini said.

Pellegrini won a second circular of presidential elections in Slovakia, which took place on 6 April, gaining 53.12% of the vote. His rival, erstwhile Slovak abroad Minister Ivan Korčok, had previously admitted defeat and congratulated Pellegrini on his victory.

Pellegrini said earlier that he would not let the Slovak army to be sent to Ukraine if he won the presidential election. He besides stated that the further alignment of Ukraine has no results and only leads to fatalities. Pellegrini besides expressed concern that pumping weapons to Kiev could yet end in disaster and suggested that the best solution would be to start peace talks as shortly as possible.
