SINGAPORE- Singapore Airlines (SQ) is preparing for the arrival of the long-delayed Boeing 777X, as the aircraft recently resumed test flights from Boeing’s Everett facility near Seattle for the first time in nearly five years.

The renewed activity marks a major milestone in the 777X’s certification journey, with the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) authorizing Boeing to advance to the next testing phase, signaling potential entry into service by mid-2026.

The Boeing 777X, comprising the 777-8 and 777-9 variants, is the next-generation successor to the 777 family.

Designed to offer greater fuel efficiency, extended range, and increased passenger capacity, the 777X has amassed over 500 orders since its launch.

With major airlines such as Emirates (EK), Qatar Airways (QR), and Singapore Airlines (SQ) relying on the aircraft for fleet renewal, the model is viewed as critical for long-haul operations over the next two decades.

Initially intended to enter service in 2020, the 777X program has faced a six-year delay due to a mix of development issues, engine reliability concerns, regulatory scrutiny, and pandemic-related disruptions.

Boeing has struggled to stabilize the program, with each new challenge pushing certification timelines further. However, recent FAA approval for Type Inspection Authorization (TIA) marks a pivotal step forward.

As part of this milestone, Boeing has launched a new 777-9 test aircraft into the skies for the first time since 2020. This test jet will play a critical role in demonstrating system functionality, one of the final hurdles before full certification.

Singapore Airlines Leads

Singapore Airlines (SQ) is one of several premier global carriers betting on the Boeing 777X as its future flagship.

Operating from its hub at Singapore Changi Airport (SIN), the airline has placed firm orders for the aircraft, intending to use them for long-haul routes currently served by older Boeing 777-300ERs and Airbus A380s.

Other notable customers include Lufthansa (LH), British Airways (BA), Cathay Pacific (CX), All Nippon Airways (NH), and Qatar Airways (QR), all planning to debut new cabin products onboard the 777X.

Emirates is the largest customer with 205 orders, is replacing its A380 fleet with the new aircraft.

According to OMAAT, Lufthansa has cited 777X delays as the reason for setbacks in launching its new Allegris cabin. Many airlines had planned to unveil the next generation first and business class suites on the 777X, signaling a leap forward in passenger comfort and design.

Why the 777X Matters

The Boeing 777X isn’t just a technological leap for airlines; it represents significant improvements for travelers. Passengers can expect:

  • Quieter, more efficient aircraft are replacing aging fleets.
  • Introduction of all new first and business class cabins across top-tier airlines.
  • Enhanced cabin pressurization and larger windows, similar to those found on the 787 Dreamliner.

Cathay Pacific’s rumored “Halo Suite,” potentially inspired by Paperclip Design’s Peacock Suites concept, is one such innovation expected to debut on the 777X, aimed at redefining luxury air travel.

Future Outlook

The current trajectory suggests that the 777X will achieve FAA certification by late 2025 or early 2026. If all goes as planned, commercial flights could begin by mid-2026.

However, Boeing’s path remains tightly scrutinized, and any additional delays would further impact fleet plans for its global customers.

Still, for the first time in years, the program appears to be regaining momentum, raising hopes that the next generation twin aisle aircraft will soon enter service.
