It all started with the fact that president Andrzej Duda in an interview with the portal at Politicy.pl referred to the question of possible nomination of Bogdan Klich as the Polish Ambassador to the United States. He expressed his conviction that Klich was unfit for this position, especially in the context of his attitude towards president Donald Trump.
In consequence to speculation about the possible appointment of the head of the MFA Radosław Sikorski, who allegedly would change Klich, Duda pointed out that specified a proposal was not made to him.
When he was asked about the current position of the US embassy, the president stated that Bogdan Klich was the head of the facility, who was acting “by force”, applying the childish rule “to anger my parent will frost my ears off.”
Sikorski responds
Radosław Sikorski responded to the President's comments on his profile on the X platform, calling for the president not to publically question the authority of chargé d'affaires in Washington, D.C., as this impedes his work for Poland. The head of the MFA added that during the President's last visit to the US, Klich demonstrated more competence than the people elected by the President.
Source: XIt should be recalled here that the conflict between the MFA and the president on ambassadors broke out in March 2024 erstwhile Minister Sikorski decided to end the mission of over 50 ambassadors and to retreat respective candidatures. president Duda announced that no appointment or cancellation of the Ambassador could take place without his signature.
As a consequence of the deficiency of agreement, the president refused to appoint fresh ambassadors, and in their place the MFA indicated chargé d’affaires, specified as in the USA, where Bogdan Klich replaced Mark Magierowski, or Ukraine, where Piotr Łukasiewicz took over the post of Jarosław Guzym.
Ensuring agreement
On Monday, president Duda reported in Polsat News that there was an agreement between the president and the abroad Ministry on the appointment of ambassadors. According to this agreement, Minister Radosław Sikorski restores the standard procedure, which begins with the preliminary acceptance of the candidacy by the President.
Duda stressed that he was willing to proceed the procedure of appointing ambassadors, pointing out that the intent was not to block them, but to guarantee that the constitutional prerogatives of the president were not violated.
The situation was commented by MFA spokesperson Paweł Wroński:
We very much hope that this conflict on the MFA line – the president has been resolved and we look forward to signing the first ambassadorial nominations. And we are very pleased with these words of the President, due to the fact that in the hard times and hard situations of the war at the gates, diplomatic service should be strong, not weakened, so this is joyful information for us.
