Siemens Energy will improve energy supply in Iraq

Iraq plans to cooperate with Siemens Energy to keep and make the supply of electricity. The government approved on Tuesday the principles of energy cooperation with a German company, as indicated by the government's message in Baghdad. Further details were not immediately disclosed.

In 2019, Siemens and the Iraqi Ministry of Energy agreed an action plan to stabilise electricity transmission and distribution across the country. The Iraqi Government has commissioned the reconstruction of the energy network in order to replace a crucial part of the destroyed energy infrastructure and to meet the country's increasing request for electricity.

Siemens Energy has since been active in various energy projects in Iraq, including long-term maintenance contracts for 3 power plants by 2023 as part of wider energy cooperation. In the same year Siemens besides signed a contract to grow the Iraqi energy network.

Iraq is heavy dependent on imports of Iranian natural gas for electricity generation and suffers from frequent power outages, even more severe during the summertime months. At the beginning of this month, power outages occurred in central and confederate regions of the country as a consequence of the abrupt closure of the Hamidiya power plant, which caused interference in the electricity transmission network, reported sources at the Ministry of Electricity.

In the last 2 years Iraq has besides signed contracts with oil companies that previously withdrew from the country, including Chevron, the French company TotalEnergies and British oil company BP.
