In a time of expanding threats and uncertainty, safety is 1 of the most crucial aspects of our lives. In Poland, thanks to the efforts of the State Fire Department, we can usage the map of shelters, which allows us to find the nearest shelter in case of danger.
According to the latest data, there are over 224 1000 MDS shelters in Poland, of which more than 10.6 1000 are construction facilities. These facilities can accommodate over 49 million people. Unfortunately, many people do not know where the shelter is, so the map of shelters in Poland is so important.
The State Fire Department carried out an inventory of construction facilities in 2023 that could service as shelters. All premises that belong to state institutions, local authorities, housing communities, cooperatives and economical operators engaged in public benefit activities were analysed. PSP officers made contact with the owners of construction sites in order to get approval to carry out inventory and receive data on the usage of the facility.

To find the nearest shelter in your area, you should enter the application “Scrony” and enter your address and set the search radius. The objects on the map were divided into 3 categories: A, B and C. The map gives details specified as the surface area of objects, which determines the number of people who can accommodate inside. Additional ‘M’ and ‘Z’ symbols indicate whether the place is intended for residents or workplaces.

The number of shelters and hiding places in voivodships is as follows:
* Mazowieckie Voivodeship: over 20,000 shelters
* Silesian Voivodeship: over 15,000 shelters
* Greater Poland: over 10,000 shelters
The revised construction law in Poland allows the construction of home shelters up to 35 m2 without permission. As of 2023, specified a facility may be created for notification. The building may be underground or partially buried in the ground.
In Poland request for home shelters is inactive growing. War in Ukraine is affected by a change of approach to safety issues. The subject of the threat of a possible atomic attack, introduced to public discussion, played an unprecedented function in expanding interest.
The cost of building a home shelter depends on many factors specified as size, materials used, equipment and the degree of personalization. Prices of basic constructions start at 120 1000 PLN. For a comfortable shelter up to 35 m2 you can pay up to 500 1000 PLN. In turn larger facilities for 8-14 people can cost from 1 million PLN.
