The laureate entered this event with a unique speech – personal, expressive and deep reflection on values specified as freedom and democracy. He spoke as a master of the phase and erudite of the highest try, and at the same time a man highly modest.
– You are faced with the boy of an illiterate parent who learned to read after the war... the boy of 2 homelands, Poland and France. Homeland is simply a community, it gives security. You can choose it – I chose it – said Seweryn. And then – the broadcast was interrupted.
TVN24 viewers could not perceive to this speech to the end. The antenna gave place to the “Fact after Facts” program. Katarzyna Kolenda-Zaleska, although congratulating the winner, rapidly moved on to a conversation with politicians, including PiS MP Michał Wójcik. For many audiences it was a symbolic moment: reflection and culture lost to current politics. It went viral immediately. There have been voices of outrage: “TVN has reached bottom”, “Give Seweryn, I do not want Wójcik”. any viewers announced a boycott of the station. Although respective 1000 entries are not yet mass traffic, it is simply a clear informing signal – ignoring the viewer always has a price. However, the problem is wider. More and more tv is subject to all political ad hocness. The programs are interrupted suddenly, with no respect for the viewer or the callers. alternatively of planned debates, spontaneous speeches by politicians who “must get on the air here and now”. alternatively of content, chaos. It's not the frame, it's the hierarchy of values. If an important, touching performance of an outstanding artist loses to another political pusher, then something has been seriously shaken.
Good tv isn't just information. It is besides a skill of listening – and respect for those who have something truly crucial to say.
