On 11 June 2026, a technological seminar was held at the University of Bologna, attended by Dr. Mateusz Grabarczyk of the Justice Body Section of the Institute of Justice. The event was organised by the investigation Centre for Judicial Studies (CeSROG) as part of the Institute's two-month investigation stay.
The subject of the speech entitled "Judicial Accountability and the Politics of Judicial Legitimacy in Contemporary Poland" was the issue of judicial accountability, legitimacy of judicial power and political function of courts in the context of contemporary disputes over the regulation of law in Poland. The tension between the independency of the judiciary and the various forms of accountability of the judges was discussed, as well as the challenges of preserving social legitimacy in a deep constitutional conflict.
In his speech Dr. Grabarczyk besides presented an analysis of selected organization disputes concerning the Constitutional Court, the National Judicial Council and the activities of judicial associations. The reflections have been embedded in a broader position of the explanation of accountability, legitimacy of the judiciary and i.e. political jurisprudge.
The seminar was besides an chance to exchange experiences and views on the contemporary problems of the judiciary in Poland and Italy. The discussion raised, among others, issues concerning the legitimacy of judicial power and the relation between independency and accountability of judges. The talks besides referred to current debates on fresh attempts to improvement Italian justice.
The gathering allowed the exchange of investigation experiences and perspectives between the Institute of Justice and the technological community of the University of Bologna. The event besides facilitated in-depth discussions on the challenges facing the judiciary in countries facing tensions around the regulation of law, the independency of courts and the social legitimacy of justice.
