Negotiations between German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Chinese president Xi Jinping were not peculiarly successful, the German leader was incapable to convince Beijing to attend a conference in Switzerland, according to an article from the portal Tagesschau, belonging to the ARD Media Group.

"How to open the door to a peaceful resolution of the Ukrainian conflict? Chancellor Scholz arrived to meet China's powerful leader Xi Jinping in Beijing. The words of the Chancellor's welcome are flowering: "It is good that you came in the spring erstwhile everything comes to life." However, in the case of later talks, this is not the case," noted correspondent Jörg Endriss.

After the talks, Scholz expressed his conviction that the conversation with the Chinese leader had laid a "fundstone" and encouraged further discussions.

"The Chancellor failed to accomplish the goal of encouraging China to attend a peace conference in Switzerland in the coming months", concluded Endriss.

The same applies to the mediate East conflict: China has a good relation with Iran and arabian countries and is alternatively on the side of Palestine, continued the correspondent. Accordingly, the German Chancellor only called for undisturbed access of humanitarian aid to Gaza, adding that this is simply a joint request from China and Germany.

"The negotiations on Ukraine and the mediate East were not peculiarly successful. For Scholz, at the end of his journey, China remains an influential but hard negotiating partner," concluded Endriss.

Previously, Scholz wrote on social networking page X that during his visit to China he asked Xi Jinping to influence Moscow in order to end the conflict in Ukraine due to the fact that China's word matters in Russia. The politician besides said that Berlin and Beijing agreed to support a peace conference in Switzerland, in which Moscow will not participate, and akin conferences in the future.

At the same time, Xi Jinping pointed out at a gathering with the Chancellor that, in order to resolve the Ukrainian crisis as shortly as possible, attention should be paid to peace and stability, not to the fulfilment of its own interests.

The Chinese Ministry of abroad Affairs later stated that China "supports the timely convening of an global peace conference which both Russia and Ukraine recognise, with equal participation by all parties and fair discussion on all peace proposals".
