Samuel Pereira was convicted of defamation. The conviction passed in June that year. The case concerns the 2019 material, the author of which was the erstwhile head of TVP Info during the PiS regulation and vice manager of the tv Information Agency.
Pereira claimed in it that the parent politician of the Civic Platform, Alexander Brejz, was expected to encourage the online slander of political opponents and instruct them how to do so.
Pereira lost in court. Now they want his pardon.
The consequence of the lost trial for Pereira is simply a fine and the cost of court costs, which together amounted to PLN 40 thousand, and the publication of an apology.
Let's add that Dorota and Krzysztof Brejz besides filed civilian lawsuits against Samuel Pereira. In 2024, the court of first instance ruled that a erstwhile TVP worker is to apologize to politics for his social media entries and to deposit PLN 15,000 on the large Orchestra of Christmas Charity.
The Centre for Monitoring the Freedom of Press of the Association of Polish Journalists has now taken the level on the final judgment. The organization, in a message published on Monday, estimated that Samuel Pereira had "accomplished a gross violation of civilian rights."
"The verdict violates the rule of freedom of expression and the right to inform the public about public matters, including the spheres of political activity of local authorities (...). The conviction condemning editor Samuel Pereira for revealing controversial facts from the lives of local elites violates these principles in an highly outrageous way," we read.
Furthermore, the association called for the declassified materials from the trial and announced that it would address president Karol Nawrocki "with a request to pardon the wrongfully convicted journalist".
