Polish citizenship can be obtained in 2 main modes: by designation as a Polish citizen and by granting citizenship by the president of Poland.

Recognition as a Polish citizen is given by the voivode and concerns people who have documented Polish origin, long stay in Poland or another relationships with the country. These people must meet certain conditions, specified as cognition of Polish language and integration into Polish society.

The granting of citizenship by the president of the Republic of Poland is more flexible. The president has extended powers and can give citizenship to people who do not even live in Poland if, for example, they have peculiar merits for the country or exceptional achievements. The procedure for granting citizenship is not limited by the request of permanent residence in Poland.

Both procedures require the presentation of appropriate papers and compliance with certain criteria, but the granting of citizenship by the president of the Republic of Poland gives more freedom and may include persons who have no links with Poland.
